Adobe Acrobat is the most powerful PDF editor there is, and it is priced like it, as a subscription of around $240 a year. Hangar is a one-time purchase that handles the everyday PDF jobs, plus images, video, and audio, all on your own machine.
Adobe Acrobat set the standard for PDF, and for deep PDF work, full editing, certified e-signatures, forms, and accessibility checking, it is still the most capable tool around. If you need all of that, Acrobat is worth its price.
Most people do not need all of that. They need to merge, compress, convert, sign, and protect PDFs, and they would rather not pay a subscription forever or send confidential documents to the cloud.
That is where Hangar fits. It does the common PDF jobs, and images, video, and audio too, on your own machine, for one payment instead of about $240 every year.
Local & offline · no cloud · pay once
The Acrobat desktop app does much of its work locally, which is good. But Acrobat is account-based: you sign in with an Adobe ID, and the sharing, e-sign, online tools, and AI features move your files into Adobe Document Cloud. The free Acrobat online tools upload your file to process it. Adobe has a strong privacy posture for a cloud product, and states it does not train AI models on your content and deletes AI uploads after twelve hours. Hangar is different by design: there is no account and no cloud, so nothing reaches a server or is retained in the first place.
Free Adobe Acrobat Reader lets you view, annotate, and sign PDFs, but editing, converting, and OCR all need a paid plan. The free Acrobat online tools are rate-limited to about one premium task per month once you sign in. Hangar gives you the full app on a free trial, and a one-time purchase removes every limit for good.
Acrobat is a subscription. Acrobat Standard is about $15 a month and Acrobat Pro about $20 a month on an annual plan, which is roughly $240 a year for Pro, every year. There is a one-time Acrobat Pro 2024 license for people who want to avoid a subscription, but it is desktop only, runs for a three-year term, and gets no feature updates. Hangar is a single payment, from $45, that stays yours.
No tool wins on everything. Adobe Acrobat is genuinely stronger in a few places, and if these matter most to you, it may be the better pick:
For the everyday PDF jobs, merge, compress, convert, sign, protect, and a lot more besides, yes, and for far less, paid once, on your own machine. If you need deep PDF editing, certified e-signatures, forms, or accessibility tooling, Acrobat is the more capable choice.
Acrobat is mainly a subscription, around $240 a year for Pro. Adobe does sell a one-time Acrobat Pro 2024 license, but it is desktop only, runs for a three-year term, and gets no new features. Hangar is a one-time purchase that stays yours with no time limit.
The Acrobat desktop app does much of its editing locally, but it is account-based and many features use the Adobe cloud, and the free online tools upload your files. Hangar runs entirely offline with no account.
Acrobat Pro is about $240 a year, so over three years it is roughly $720. Hangar is a single payment from $45. You stop paying after the first time.
