How it works

How to compress a PDF on Mac or Windows

  1. Drop one PDF or hundreds

Drag files onto Hangar, or just type what you want, like “make this PDF smaller”.

  2. Pick how small

Balanced suits most files. Extreme and Maximum are for strict upload limits, Quality for portfolios and print.

  3. Get smaller copies

They are saved as new files in your output folder, sorted by tool and date. Your originals never change. If a file cannot get any smaller, Hangar keeps the original.

New to Hangar? How to run a tool, step by step

Choose how small

Pick a preset. Text stays crisp at every one.

Most of a big PDF’s size is the pictures inside it. Presets decide how hard those get compressed. Text, fonts and drawings are never touched. For a copy that is only read on screen, Maximum goes even smaller than Extreme.

  • Quality

    Images stay sharp.

Best for portfolios and anything headed to print.

  • Balanced

    Start here

The right size for most files.

Best for decks, reports and everyday sharing.

  • Extreme

The smallest file you can still read on screen.

Best for strict upload limits and email.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Which preset should I use?

Start with Balanced. It suits most files and keeps them comfortable to read and print. Use Extreme when a file must fit a strict size limit and will only be read on screen, and Maximum when even Extreme is not small enough. Use Quality when the images matter, such as a portfolio or a document headed to print.

How do I get the smallest possible file?

Choose Maximum if the file is only for reading on screen, otherwise Extreme. Both try several versions and keep the smallest. If you need it smaller still, open Advanced and lower Image quality, or turn on Convert to grayscale when color is not needed. Lowering the image quality has the biggest effect on photo-heavy and scanned files.

Why did my file barely shrink?

Presets mostly change how the images inside a PDF are compressed. A file that is mostly text, a black-and-white scan, or one that was already well optimized has little the presets can remove, so every preset gives about the same result. Hangar still stores it more compactly, and it keeps your original if that is not smaller. The Compress PDF guide in the help center explains each case.

Does compressing reduce the quality of the text?

No. Text, fonts, and drawings are kept exactly as they are at every setting. Only the images inside the PDF are re-encoded, and only if Re-encode images is on.

Can I compress many PDFs at once?

Yes. Add as many PDFs as you like and Hangar compresses them in one pass, each with its own progress. To reuse your settings, add a Compress step to a chain.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

Compression runs on unencrypted PDFs. If a file is locked, remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then compress it.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
