iLovePDF rents you PDF tools that run in its cloud, one yearly bill at a time. Hangar sells you the whole workshop outright: those same PDF jobs, plus image, video, and audio tools, running on your own machine for a single price.
iLovePDF is one of the best-known PDF sites on the web, and for a quick one-off in a browser it does the job. The trouble starts when it becomes a habit. Every file rides up to its servers, the free tier taps out fast, and the version worth having renews on your card every year.
Hangar turns that arrangement inside out. You pay once, the app is yours, and PDFs are only the start of it. Merge, compress, convert, OCR, sign, and protect are all here, sitting next to a full bench of image, video, and audio tools.
The part that changes how it feels day to day: everything happens on your computer. No cloud, no account, no server that has to be up for you to work. You bought the tools and you own the machine they run on, so the files stay put and the bill does not come back around.
Local & offline · no cloud · pay once
Using the iLovePDF website means handing your file to its servers to be processed. The company deletes it within two hours and holds real security certifications, so this is a careful operation, not a careless one. But careful is not the same as private: the document still travels to hardware you neither see nor control. Hangar removes that step entirely. Each tool runs inside the app on your desk, so there is no cloud step, no copy sitting in a datacenter, and no policy you have to take on trust.
iLovePDF gives away the basics, but with the brakes on: file sizes are capped per tool, some tools take only a file or two at a time, the sharper tools and the AI live behind Premium, and ads ride along. Hangar caps nothing. Feed it a 500-page report or a folder of several hundred files and it works through the lot, on the free trial and after you buy alike.
Premium is a rental: roughly $7 a month, or $48 a year, per person, with Business quoted on request. Skip a year and the tools switch back off, because you were paying for access, not for the software. Hangar asks once, from $45, and then it is simply yours. (iLovePDF prices by region, so confirm the figure where you are.)
No tool wins on everything. iLovePDF is genuinely stronger in a few places, and if these matter most to you, it may be the better pick:
For most people, comfortably. You get the same PDF jobs with nothing uploaded and nothing to renew, wrapped in an app that also handles images, video, and audio. iLovePDF still makes sense in one case: when you need to work inside a browser on a device you cannot install software on, or from your phone.
Its web and mobile apps do, sending each file to its servers and deleting it within two hours by policy; only its separate desktop app stays local. Hangar never sends a file to the cloud, on any tool, so the question does not arise.
The free tier is genuine but fenced in: capped sizes, small batches, ads, and the advanced tools reserved for Premium. Hangar lets the free trial run the entire toolset, and a one-time purchase lifts the caps for good.
iLovePDF Premium keeps billing, about $7 a month or $48 a year for each user. Hangar is a single payment from $45 and never asks again.
