Remove names, account numbers and anything else you mark, so it cannot be copied, searched or recovered. Search for terms across a whole batch, then check every match on the page. The documents you are protecting never leave your computer.

The test that matters
Many apps only draw a shape over the text. The words are still in the file, one copy and paste away. Hangar removes what is under every box, checks each page, and saves nothing if the check fails.
Copy, search or open the file in another app, and the name comes back.
Text, pictures and drawings under the boxes are gone. A page Hangar cannot prove clean is saved as an image with the boxes burned in.
Hangar’s side shows the run in the recording, checked with tools other than Hangar. The covered-only side shows what a drawn box leaves behind.
The alternative
Acrobat Pro has real redaction too, and it keeps the rest of the page as selectable text. If you redact every day and need that, it is a fair choice. If you redact now and then, here is the trade.

How it works
Type names and numbers, or import a list from a TXT, CSV or TSV file. Each term is found on every page of every PDF in the queue.
Matches show as dashed boxes on the page. Draw your own boxes over anything a search cannot find, such as a signature, a photo or a scanned page.
Hangar removes what is under every box, checks that no text is left inside, and saves a copy ending in -redacted. If it cannot confirm that, no copy is saved.
New to Hangar? How to run a tool, step by step
Choose how to mark it
Search terms catch a name everywhere it is typed. Boxes catch what a search cannot, like signatures and scans. Every marked area is checked for leftover text before the copy is saved.
A name or number removed wherever it appears.
Best for names, account numbers and case references.
Paste or import a whole list of terms at once.
Best for long client lists or a spreadsheet of IDs.
Anything you draw over is gone: text, pictures and drawings.
Best for signatures, photos, logos and scanned pages.
Every setting, explained in the Redact PDF guide Blackout boxes · Search terms · Strip document metadata · Whole values only
Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.
No. Your run history records only how many search terms you used, never the terms. Boxes and terms stay in the app until you close it.
Open it in your usual PDF reader and search for each name you removed. Look at every page, including headers and footers, and always send the copy ending in -redacted.
Yes. The content under each mark is deleted and then checked to confirm it extracts nothing. This is real removal, not a black box drawn on top.
Complex pages are rebuilt as an image of the page with the boxes burned in, so there is no way to recover what was removed. The text on those pages is no longer selectable or searchable.
Yes, wherever it appears in the PDF’s text. Scanned pages need OCR PDF first, or a box drawn by hand.
No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.
Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
Who uses it
Remove names and account numbers from contracts and statements before they go to the other side.
Clear salaries, addresses and ID numbers from documents before they circulate.
Black out client names and figures before a past project goes into a pitch.
Hangar for agencies and studiosOne app, one payment
The same app merges, splits, signs, redacts and reads scanned PDFs, and does the same kind of work for images, video and audio. One payment covers every tool.
Save it as a chain
Redact the names. Then compress the copy, which often grows when pages become images, and put a password on it.
How chains workThen pay once, from $45, for every tool and the updates for your version. No subscription. 30-day refund.See plans
