How it works

How to compress images on Mac or Windows

  1. Drop one image or hundreds

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and BMP work everywhere, and HEIC works on a Mac.

  2. Pick a preset or a size

Balanced suits most photos. Choose Target size to keep every JPEG, WebP and AVIF under a limit like 500 KB.

  3. Get smaller copies

Same name, same format, saved in your output folder. Your originals never change.

New to Hangar? How to run a tool, step by step

Choose how small

Three presets. Your format stays the same.

Presets set the quality and how far oversized photos are scaled down. PNG files are stored more compactly at every preset, with no pixel changed.

  • Extreme

The smallest files, capped at 1600 pixels.

Best for thumbnails, previews and strict upload limits.

  • Balanced

    Start here

Small files that still look the same, up to 2560 pixels.

Best for websites, stores and email.

  • Quality

    The most detail, no resizing.

Best for portfolios and print proofs.

The alternative

Why not just use TinyPNG?

TinyPNG compresses well and is quick for a handful of images. The catch is the upload, the free caps and the yearly fee.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Can it get every photo under a size limit, like 500 KB?

Yes, for JPEG, WebP and AVIF. Choose Target size and type the limit. Hangar keeps the highest quality that fits.

Can I compress HEIC photos on Windows?

Not with this tool. On Windows, convert HEIC photos to JPEG with Convert images first, then compress them.

Does it change the file format?

No. A JPEG stays a JPEG and a PNG stays a PNG. Only the size comes down.

Is PNG compression lossless?

Yes. PNG files are optimized without touching the pixels, so they stay perfectly sharp.

Does it work on iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes, on a Mac, on the quality lever. Resize and grayscale are not applied to HEIC in this pass; run Convert first if you need those too.

What about GIF or TIFF?

Not yet on this tool. Convert them to JPEG or PNG first with the Convert Images tool, then compress.

Could it ever make a file bigger?

No. If a file would not get smaller, even after a resize or grayscale, Hangar keeps your original.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
