Hangar runs on your own computer. The files you process never leave your machine, there is no account to create, and the app does not send your documents to us or anyone else. The only personal data we handle is what the website and checkout need to sell you a license and support you.
How the app handles your files
Hangar is a local-first desktop app. Every tool runs on your own Mac or PC, and the files you open, process, and export stay on your machine. We never receive them, store them, or see them. There is no user account, and you do not sign in to use the app.
The app makes an outgoing internet connection in only a few limited cases:
- Optional model downloads. Some tools, such as Transcribe and Remove background, can download a machine-learning model the first time you choose to use them. The download fetches the model only. It does not send your files or any personal data.
- Update checks. The app may check whether a newer version is available so it can offer to update. This does not transmit your files or identify you.
- Outputs you choose. If a future feature lets you send a file somewhere on purpose, that happens only because you asked for it, to the destination you picked.
- Optional, anonymous usage analytics. If you choose to turn it on, the app sends anonymous product analytics (which tools you use, never your files or their names) so we can improve Hangar. It is off by default and you can turn it off again at any time in Settings.
None of these connections carry the contents of the files you work on. Your documents, images, video, and audio do not leave your computer through Hangar.
Data the website and checkout collect
The parts of Hangar that do involve personal data are this website and the purchase flow.
When you buy a license
Payments are handled by our payment processor, Polar and Chariow. To complete your order and deliver your license, we and the processor handle your name, email address, and the details of your purchase. Card details are entered with the processor and are not stored on our servers.
When you contact us
If you email us for support or any other reason, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to put in your message, and we keep it so we can help you and follow up.
When you visit the site
The website is served through our hosting provider, which keeps standard server logs for security and reliability. We do not use advertising retargeting and we do not sell your data. We use PostHog (EU-hosted), configured without cookies and without profiling, to understand overall traffic. This does not identify you.
If you arrive through an affiliate link, this site and Referly remember the partner attribution in your browser so the partner can receive credit if you buy Hangar. That identifier is passed to Polar when you open checkout and is used only for referral attribution, commission administration, and related fraud prevention—not advertising profiling.
Why we use this data
- To take payment and deliver your license key.
- To provide support and respond to your questions.
- To send you important notices about your purchase or your license.
- To attribute qualifying purchases and administer affiliate commissions.
- To meet our tax, accounting, and other legal obligations.
Who we share it with
We share personal data only with the service providers we need to run Hangar, and only as far as they need it to do their job:
- Our payment processor, Polar and Chariow, to take payment and handle invoicing.
- Referly, to record affiliate referrals and administer commissions.
- Our email provider, to deliver license keys and reply to support.
- Our hosting provider, to serve this website and host downloads.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for anyone else's advertising. We may disclose data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your purchase records for as long as you hold the license and for as long as tax and accounting law requires. We keep support messages for a reasonable period so we have the context of past conversations. You can ask us to delete data we are not legally required to keep.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to ask us to delete it, to receive a copy, or to object to certain uses. To make any of these requests, email eliot@hangar.tools and we will respond as the law requires.
International transfers
Our service providers may process data in countries other than your own. Where that happens, we rely on those providers' safeguards for moving data responsibly.
Children
Hangar is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Hangar changes. When we do, we will update the date at the top of the page, and we will flag any significant change.
