Where the AI runs

The model runs on your computer. Not on a server.

Transcription services upload your recording and often bill by the minute. Hangar runs the speech model on your computer, so interviews and private calls stay with you.

  1. Your file

Audio or video: MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, MP4, MOV and more.

  2. Model on this computer

A speech model you choose once. It downloads, then runs offline.

  3. The result

Subtitles or text named after the recording: SRT, VTT, TXT or JSON.

Upload to a serverNot part of the path. Your file and the result never leave this computer.

Hard cases

What it hears well, and what to check.

Speech models do best with clear voices. Plan a quick read-through for the rest.

The most accurate case, in any of the 99 languages of Best overall.

  • Long English recordings

English · Long-form gives precise timing for each word.

  • People talking over each other

Overlapping speech can blur. Read it before you publish.

  • Names and jargon

Check the spelling of names, brands and places.

How it works

How to transcribe audio on Mac or Windows

  1. Drop recordings or videos

Add MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC and other audio, or a video file. One file or a whole batch.

  2. Pick a mode and a format

Best overall covers 99 languages and can translate foreign speech into English. Choose SRT or VTT subtitles, plain text or JSON.

  3. Get timed text

Subtitle cues come timed and wrapped to 42 characters a line by default. The first time you use a mode, Hangar asks before a one-time download, then it works offline.

Choose the result

Subtitles, plain text or data. Same words.

The transcript is the same whichever format you pick; only the packaging changes. Subtitle files carry timed cues, text reads like a document, and JSON keeps the timing of every word.

  • SRT

    Start here

Timed subtitles that video apps accept.

Best for YouTube, social clips and video editors. Pick VTT for web players.

  • TXT

The words as plain, readable text.

Best for show notes, articles and meeting records.

  • JSON

    Every word with its timing.

Best for your own scripts, search tools and editing workflows.

The alternative

Why not use a transcription service?

Cloud services are quick to start, and many add extras like speaker names and summaries. The catch is that every recording goes to their servers, and the bill grows with the minutes.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Does it label who is speaking?

No. You get every word with its timing, but not speaker names. Add names by hand in the text if you need them.

Can I transcribe a video without extracting the audio first?

Yes. Add the video file directly and Hangar transcribes its soundtrack.

How much disk space does it need?

Each mode downloads once, from about 190 MB for English · Quick to about 670 MB for European languages. You can remove a download again from inside the tool.

Does my audio leave my computer?

No. Transcription happens locally. Your recordings never go to the cloud, and there is no per-minute charge.

Do I need to be online?

Only for the one-time setup of each transcription mode you use. After that the mode runs offline and stays on your machine.

Can it make subtitle files?

Yes. Export SRT or VTT and the cues come timed and line-wrapped, ready to drop onto a video. You can also export plain text or JSON with word-level timing.

Can it handle other languages?

Yes. Best overall covers 99 languages and can translate foreign speech into English. European languages covers 25 languages and detects which one is spoken.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
