Convertio handles a huge range of formats in the browser, on a monthly subscription that renews whether you convert one file or a hundred. Hangar converts the everyday formats on your own machine and then stays, as one tool in an app you own for good.
Convertio is a capable converter with a genuinely wide net, more than 300 formats, and for a rare, one-time conversion it is a good place to land.
The friction shows up with normal use. Free files stop at 100 MB, the day gives you ten conversion minutes, and there is a wall waiting mid-task if your file is large or your folder is full. Clear it and you are on a monthly plan. And when the converting is done, there is nothing left in your hands: it was a website, not software you keep.
Hangar handles the ordinary formats, HEIC, MOV, WAV, Word, on your own computer, in batches, with no cloud and no ceiling to bump into. It is also a whole app rather than one page: convert sits beside dozens of others, bought once and yours to keep.
Local & offline · no cloud · pay once
Convertio takes your file up to its servers in Germany, converts it, deletes the input straight away, and clears the output within a day. It runs over TLS, holds ISO 27001, and is GDPR compliant, careful handling by any measure. The file still leaves your machine to be handled, though. With Hangar the conversion happens where the file already is, on your computer, so nothing is sent anywhere and no server sees it.
The free plan draws hard lines: 100 MB per file, two conversions at once, ten conversion minutes for the whole day. A batch of large files hits all three at speed, and then it is a subscription. Hangar draws none of those lines, convert a folder of heavy files in one go, as often as the work demands.
Convertio runs month to month, from around $12 up to custom plans, metered in conversion credits, with no buy-once option, so the charge recurs for as long as you keep it. Hangar is a single payment, from $45, and never meters a file. (Convertio prices by plan and region, so check the current figure.)
No tool wins on everything. Convertio is genuinely stronger in a few places, and if these matter most to you, it may be the better pick:
For the conversions most people run, yes, done locally, in batches, for one price, as part of an app that does far more than convert, all on your machine. Convertio wins the moment you need a rare format from its long list, or an API to automate the work.
Yes, each file is uploaded to its German servers to be converted, with the input deleted immediately and the output within 24 hours. Hangar converts on your own machine. No cloud.
Up to a point, 100 MB files and ten conversion minutes a day, past which it is a monthly subscription. Hangar has no such caps and no per-file cost after one purchase.
