How it works

How to batch rename files on Mac or Windows

  1. Drop the files to rename

Any file types. Extensions are always kept.

  2. Build the new names

Stack find and replace, a prefix or suffix, a sequence, case, dates and cleanup, in the order they should run.

  3. Check the preview and run

Every old and new name is listed, and clashes block the run. Copies are the default, so originals stay untouched.

New to Hangar? How to run a tool, step by step

Choose the change

Number it, fix it, date it. Or all three at once.

Each change is a step, and steps run in the order you stack them. Combine a find and replace with a sequence and a date, and watch the preview update as you go.

  • Sequence

    Start here

    IMG_4183 becomes shoot-01, shoot-02 and on.

Best for photo shoots and numbered sets.

  • Find and replace

Swap text everywhere, with plain text or a regular expression.

Best for fixing a client name or a typo across a folder.

  • Dates

Add the created, modified or current date to every name.

Best for deliveries, versions and records.

The alternative

Why not rename in Finder or File Explorer?

Finder’s built-in rename is free and handles a simple replace or a numbered list well. When a name needs several changes and zero mistakes, here is the difference.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Will it change my file extensions?

No. The extension is always kept, so a .jpg stays a .jpg whatever pattern you use.

Can I preview every new filename first?

Yes. The live preview shows each old and new name and flags collisions or invalid names before Hangar can run.

Can I keep the original files?

Yes, and that is the default. With Output set to Save copies, Hangar saves renamed copies in your output folder and leaves every original untouched.

Can I undo a batch rename?

After a Rename originals run, Undo last rename puts the old names back in one click. Only the latest such rename can be undone. Save copies runs do not need undo because the originals were never changed.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
