Where the AI runs

The model runs on your computer. Not on a server.

Copying text out of an image online means uploading the image. Hangar reads it on your computer.

  1. Your file

Screenshots, photos and scans: JPG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF and more.

  2. Model on this computer

Tesseract runs inside Hangar. English is built in; other languages download once.

  3. The result

A plain text file ending in -text.txt, ready to paste anywhere.

Upload to a serverNot part of the path. Your file and the result never leave this computer.

Languages

  • English
    Built in

    Ready the moment you install.

Best for: English documents, from day one.

  • 36 more
About 3 to 15 MB each, once

Add only the languages your documents use.

Best for: French, German, Spanish, Hindi, Japanese and the rest.

Recognition runs with Tesseract inside Hangar. Each language downloads once, is checked, and stays on this computer.

Hard cases

What reads cleanly, and what needs a check.

Recognition is only as good as the image.

  • Clean printed pages

In the run in the recording, it read 95% of the words in a photo correctly. Clear scans read best.

  • Photos of paper

Even light and a straight page help. Shadows and steep angles cost words.

  • Handwriting

Not what this recognizer is built for. Expect gaps.

  • Names and numbers

Check the ones that matter, such as amounts and reference numbers.

How it works

How to extract text from an image on Mac or Windows

  2. Tick the languages

English is built in. Tick only the languages in your images; others download once.

Built in, ready the moment you install.

Best for most screenshots and documents.

  • Another language

    A one-time download of about 3 to 15 MB.

Best for menus, letters and signs in French, German, Japanese and more.

  • Several at once

Tick more than one for mixed text.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Can I get a searchable PDF instead?

Yes, with Image to PDF, called Image OCR in the app. It makes a searchable PDF from each image and can save a .txt file too.

Can it read vertical Chinese or Japanese text?

No. Chinese, Japanese and Korean are read when the text runs across the image, not in vertical columns.

What kinds of images can it read?

Common formats including JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and TIFF. Each is read and its text written to a plain .txt file.

Which languages does it support?

37 languages. English is built in, and each of the others downloads the first time you choose it, then works offline.

Does my image get uploaded?

No. The text is read on your own machine, so nothing is sent anywhere.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
