Add subtitles to video on your Mac or PC. No cloud.

Hangar listens to the speech, writes the captions and burns them into the picture, all on your own computer. Pick a look, fix any word, highlight each word as it is spoken, and deliver vertical, square or widescreen from the same clip. The video is never uploaded.

Where the AI runs

The model runs on your computer. Not on a server.

Caption apps upload your video to transcribe it. Hangar hears the speech and draws the captions on your computer, so unreleased videos stay unreleased.

  1. Your file

A video: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV.

  2. Model on this computer

A speech model you set up once. Then it runs locally and offline.

  3. The result

A new MP4 with the captions burned into the picture, ending in -captioned.

Upload to a serverNot part of the path. Your file and the result never leave this computer.

Hard cases

What to know before you post.

The captions come from what the model hears, and they become part of the picture.

  • Burned in means always on

Viewers cannot turn the captions off. Keep the original for a clean copy.

  • Clear speech

Reads best. Music under the voice can cost words.

  • Names and brands

Check the spelling in the Studio before you export.

  • Many languages

Best overall covers 99. Multilingual · Quick is lighter for slower computers.

How it works

How to add subtitles to a video on Mac or Windows

  1. Drop a video

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV all work. Hangar transcribes the speech on your computer, with every word timed.

  2. Pick a look, fix any word

Start from a ready-made style, then set the typeface, colors, size and position. Edit any caption, or find and replace a name.

  3. Choose the shape and export

Keep the source shape or deliver 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 or 16:9, cropped to fit. You get an MP4 with the captions burned in.

Choose the delivery shape

One clip, captioned for every feed.

Pick the shape you deliver and the frame is cropped to fit, never padded with bars. You choose where the crop sits, and the captions go wherever you place them.

  • Source

    Start here

    The clip’s own shape.

Best for YouTube, courses and the web.

  • 9:16

A vertical cut from any clip.

Best for Reels, TikTok and Shorts.

  • 1:1

    A square cut.

Best for feeds where square takes the most room.

The alternative

Why not use an online caption app?

Online caption apps are good, often with bigger style libraries and team features. They all start the same way: your video goes to their servers to be transcribed.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Does it need the internet?

Only once, to download the speech model the first time you caption. After that it works offline, and your video is never uploaded.

Can I fix words it gets wrong?

Yes. Edit any caption before you export, and use find and replace to fix a name everywhere at once.

Can I get an SRT file instead?

Caption video burns the words into the picture. For a separate SRT or VTT file, use Transcribe, which also runs on your computer.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
