How to split a video into parts on Mac or Windows

Each mark is a moment in the recording above. Pick one to play it from there.

Split video in three steps

  1. Drop a long video

Or a batch of them. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and M4V all work.

  2. Choose how to split

Equal parts, By duration or At silences. Or open the Studio and place your own cut points on the timeline.

  3. Pick Fast or Precise

Fast copies the pieces out instantly in the original format. Precise cuts on the exact frame and saves MP4s.

New to Hangar? How to run a tool, step by step

Choose how to split

By count, by length or at the pauses.

Equal parts and By duration cut on the clock. At silences listens for pauses and keeps only the speech. For chapters, place your own cut points in the Studio.

  • Equal parts

    Start here

A set number of even pieces.

Best for long recordings you want in halves or thirds.

  • By duration

A new clip every so many seconds.

Best for 60-second chunks for social.

  • At silences

The pauses dropped, the speech kept.

Best for talks, lectures and interviews.

The alternative

Why not split it in a video editor?

An editor can razor a clip anywhere, with zoom and snapping. Then each piece needs its own export, and for ten chapters or a batch of recordings that is the slow part.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Can I put the pieces back together in a new order?

Yes, with Join videos. Drag the clips into the order you want and join them into one MP4, with a transition between each if you like.

Can it split automatically at the quiet parts?

Yes. Silence mode finds the silent gaps and drops them, keeping the spoken sections, with controls for how quiet and how long counts as silence.

Equal parts or fixed lengths?

Either. Split into a set number of equal pieces, or into chunks of a fixed number of seconds.

Is splitting lossless?

In Fast mode, yes, the pieces are copied without re-encoding. Precise mode re-encodes for frame-accurate cut points.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
