What does Split video do?

Split video cuts one video into several shorter files, on your own computer. Turn a long recording into equal parts, chop it into one-minute pieces for social posts, keep each spoken part as its own clip, or cut it exactly where you choose. In the app the tool is called Split Video.

Every video in the queue is split the same way, unless you place your own cuts on a clip in the Studio. The pieces are saved as separate files next to each other in the output folder.

Split Video, from one 16 second reel to four product clips

Step 1: Add your videos

Click Tools in the sidebar, open the Video tab and click Split Video in the Cut & join section. You can also type "split" in the search box at the top.

Drop your videos on the queue, or click it to pick files. Each row shows the video’s size and length, such as "1920 × 1080 · 0:48". Use Add more to add files later.

Step 2: Choose how to split

Under Split by, pick one of three ways:

  • Equal parts cuts each video into the same number of pieces of equal length. Set the Number of parts.
  • By duration cuts a piece every so many seconds. Set the Seconds per piece, such as 60 for one-minute pieces. The last piece is shorter when the video doesn’t divide evenly.
  • At silences keeps each spoken part as its own piece and drops the pauses between them. Set the Sensitivity, the Minimum pause that counts as a break, and the Edge padding kept around speech.

For Equal parts and By duration, also choose the Mode:

  • Fast is instant and keeps the full quality, because nothing is re-encoded. Each piece begins on the nearest keyframe at or before the cut, so it can start a moment early.
  • Precise cuts on the exact frame and saves each piece as an MP4. It takes longer.

At silences always cuts on the exact frame and saves MP4 pieces.

Step 3: Place your own cuts in the Studio

Click Edit cut points per clip in the Studio, or Adjust on a video in the queue. The Studio plays the clip with a timeline under it.

  • Play or drag along the timeline to find a moment, then click + Cut here. You can also click the timeline to drop a cut where you click.
  • Drag a cut to move it. Click a cut to remove it, or click Reset to remove them all.
  • The pieces between cuts are numbered, and the line under the timeline shows how many pieces you will get.
  • Pick Fast or Precise for this clip next to the buttons.

A clip with cuts gets a ★ and uses its own cuts instead of the batch setting. Remove all its cuts to put it back on the batch setting. Use the arrows at the top, or the strip of clips at the bottom, to move between videos. Your cuts are saved as you go; close the Studio when you are done. Studio cuts last until you close Hangar.

Step 4: Run, then check the pieces

Check where the files will go: Default output folder saves them in your workspace’s output folder, in a split folder with a subfolder for today’s date, such as 10-15. Click Change to pick another folder for this run. Then click Run split.

When the run ends, each video shows Done and how many files it became. Click that count, such as "4 files", to list the pieces, and View to watch one. Click Open folder to go to them. Each piece has the video’s name with a number, such as filming-tips-take-3-1.mp4. Fast keeps the original format; Precise and At silences save MP4 files. See See and compare your results and Where your files are saved.

Number of parts

With Equal parts, how many pieces of equal length each video becomes.

With By duration, the length of each piece. The last piece holds what is left.

With At silences. Auto listens for speech and adapts to each video’s background noise. Tight treats more of the quiet as silence.

The shortest pause that splits the video. Shorter pauses stay inside a piece.

  • Range0.1 to 5 seconds
  • Default0.5 seconds
Edge padding

Quiet time kept at the start and end of each piece, so words are not clipped.

  • Range0 to 1 second

How do I get the best results?

  • For social clips of a set length, use By duration, such as 60 seconds, with Fast. Check the last piece, which is often shorter.
  • For clean cuts at a scene change, place the cuts in the Studio and pick Precise for that clip, so each piece starts on the exact frame.
  • For talks and interviews, try At silences. If you get too many tiny pieces, raise Minimum pause so only longer breaks split the video.
  • To remove part of a video instead of splitting it, use Trim Video.

Why does a result look wrong?

  • A piece starts a moment early. Fast starts each piece on the nearest keyframe before the cut. Use Precise for exact cuts.
  • I got one piece instead of several. With At silences, the video may have no sound or no pauses long enough. With By duration, the seconds per piece may be longer than the video.
  • I got lots of very short pieces. With At silences, raise Minimum pause or choose a gentler Sensitivity.
  • A file failed saying a piece had no usable video. Fast could not make a playable piece at that cut. Run it again with Precise.
  • The pieces are MP4 files now. Precise and At silences always save MP4. Use Fast to keep the original format.

For other errors, see A file failed: what to check.

Limits

  • Split Video takes MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, M4V, MPG, MPEG, TS, MTS, M2TS, 3GP and WMV files.
  • Up to 2,000 equal parts per video.
  • It does not find scene changes on its own. Place cuts in the Studio for that.
  • Splitting at silences is set for the whole batch. The Studio places cuts by hand.
  • All pieces are saved in one folder, named with the video’s name and a number.
  • Cuts placed in the Studio last until you close Hangar.
  • Add video files, not folders.
  • Everything runs on your computer. Nothing is uploaded.

Common questions

How do I cut a video at exact moments I choose?

Click Edit cut points per clip in the Studio, play or scrub to the moment, and click + Cut here. Add as many cuts as you need. Each part between two cuts becomes its own file.

Does splitting lower the quality?

Not with Fast. Fast copies each piece exactly as it is, with no re-encoding. Precise and At silences re-encode each piece to a new MP4 file, which can change the quality slightly.

Why does a piece start a little before my cut?

Fast can only start a piece on a keyframe, a full picture the video stores from time to time, so the piece begins at the keyframe at or just before your cut. Choose Precise to cut on the exact frame.

Can it split a video at each new scene?

Not automatically. Split Video cuts into equal parts, every so many seconds, at silences, or at cut points you place in the Studio. For a reel with a scene change at each product, place a cut at each change in the Studio.

What are the pieces called?

Each piece keeps the video’s name with a number added: filming-tips-take-3-1.mp4, filming-tips-take-3-2.mp4 and so on. All the pieces are saved together in the output folder.

Is my original video changed?

No. Hangar saves the pieces as new files and leaves the original where it was.
