Inside the file

Your photo says where you were. Until you clean it.

A phone photo carries the exact spot it was taken, the camera and the time, hidden in its EXIF details. This is the first photo from the recording, read before and after with exiftool.

The alternative

Why not use the options built into your computer?

Mac and Windows both have free ways to drop a photo’s location, and they work for a few files. They vary by app, and they rarely clear everything.

How it works

How to remove metadata from photos on Mac or Windows

  1. Drop your photos

JPG, PNG, WebP and TIFF. Add one photo or hundreds.

  2. Keep orientation on

It keeps the one detail that shows turned photos upright. Everything else in the EXIF details goes.

  3. Share the clean copies

They land in your output folder with the same names. The originals keep their details.

What gets removed

The details a photo gives away. Gone.

Phones and cameras hide these details in every photo. Hangar removes them and copies the picture exactly, so quality never changes.

  • GPS location

    Where the photo was taken.

Matters most for photos of your home, kids or clients.

  • Camera & lens

    The device, model and lens.

Matters for anonymous posts and shared sets.

  • Date & time

    When the photo was taken.

Matters for photos that reveal routines or travel.

Questions

Before you download

More answers in the help center.

Is it really free?

Every tool is free for 3 days, with no account and no card. After that, Hangar is a one-time payment from $45, with updates for the version you buy. There is no subscription.

Can it clean iPhone HEIC photos?

Not this tool. Convert them to JPEG with Convert images, which leaves the metadata out by default.

Does it remove captions and keywords too?

No. Captions, keywords and copyright notes added by editing apps stay in JPEG and WebP files. For a file with nothing hidden at all, use Convert images with Strip metadata on.

Does it reduce the image quality?

No. The pixels are left untouched and only the metadata is rewritten, so the image is identical apart from the data you removed.

Does it remove GPS location?

Yes. The location and the rest of the EXIF data are removed, which is exactly what you want before sharing a photo publicly. Some editing apps also copy the location into other notes inside JPEG and WebP files, and those are not removed.

Will the photo still be the right way up?

Yes. By default the orientation tag is kept so the image still displays upright, while the rest of the EXIF data is stripped.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your computer and never sent anywhere. Hangar sends anonymous usage counts to improve the app, never file names or contents, and you can turn that off in Settings.

Does one license cover Mac and Windows?

Yes. A license works on any mix of Mac and Windows computers. Solo covers 1 computer, Crew 3 and Fleet 10.
