What does Trim video do?
Trim video cuts the parts of a video you don’t want, on your own computer. Cut the slate and the tail off a batch of takes, remove the dead air from a talking video, or delete words from a transcript to cut them from the video. In the app the tool is called Trim Video.
You can trim every video the same way with a start and end time, remove the silences from all of them at once, or open each clip in the Studio and choose exactly what to keep. Each video gives one new file.
Step 1: Add your videos
Click Tools in the sidebar, open the Video tab and click Trim Video in the Cut & join section. You can also type "trim" in the search box at the top.
Drop your videos on the queue, or click it to pick files. Each row shows the video’s size, length and file size, such as "1920 × 1080 · 0:48". Use Add more to add files later.

Step 2: Choose what to cut
Under Trim type, pick one of two ways. Both apply to every video in the queue.
- Time range keeps one part of each video. Type the Start and End as minutes and seconds (0:05), hours, minutes and seconds (1:02:30) or plain seconds (90). Leave Start empty to begin at the start, and End empty to go to the end.
- Remove silence finds the quiet parts in each video and cuts them out. Sensitivity sets how quiet a part must be. Minimum pause is the shortest pause to remove, and Edge padding keeps a little room around speech so words are not clipped.
With Time range, also choose the Mode:
- Fast is instant and keeps the full quality, because nothing is re-encoded. The cut starts on the nearest keyframe at or before your Start, so it can begin a little early.
- Precise cuts on the exact frame and saves a new MP4 file. It takes longer.
Remove silence is always frame-accurate and always saves an MP4.

Step 3: Fine-tune each clip in the Studio
Click Edit per clip in the Studio, or Adjust on a video in the queue. The Studio plays the clip with a timeline under it. Amber sections are kept and striped sections are removed.
- Drag the edges of an amber section to move its start or end. Drag a section to move it.
- Drag across a striped part to keep it too. Select a section and press Delete to remove it.
- Click Remove at playhead to take out a short moment where the playhead is.
- In the Silence tab, turn on Remove silence to cut the pauses from this clip only. It has its own Sensitivity, Minimum pause and Edge padding, which start at Auto, 0.5 s and 0.12 s and don’t follow the panel. The tab shows how much is kept, such as "0:29 from 0:48". Each removed pause shows its length on the timeline. Point at it and click + Keep to put it back.
Switch between Result and Source above the video to watch the trimmed clip or the original. Use the arrows at the top to move to the next clip. Your changes are saved as you go; close the Studio when you are done.

A clip you change in the Studio gets a ★ and keeps its own trim, even if you change the batch settings later. Click Reset custom changes in the Studio to put it back on the batch settings. Studio changes last until you close Hangar.
The Studio picks the fastest way to save each clip. A single section that starts at 0:00 is copied as it is, with no quality change. Anything else, such as several sections or a later start, is cut on the exact frames and saved as an MP4.
Step 4: Cut words from the transcript
In the Studio, the Transcript tab lets you edit the video by editing its text. Pick the Spoken language or leave it on Automatic, then click Transcribe. The first time, the button reads Download speech model · 574 MB: Hangar downloads the model once, then everything runs on your computer. See AI models.
- Click a word to jump to it. Drag across words and press Delete (or Backspace) to cut them from the video.
- Click Fillers to see the ums, uhs and repeated words Hangar found. Hesitations and repeated words are selected for you. Click one to hear it in context, then click Remove (the button shows how many) to cut them all at once.
- Type in Find in transcript to find a word or phrase, then delete every match in one click.
- Long pauses show as small chips with their length. Delete one to shorten that pause.
Every cut you make in the transcript also shows on the timeline, and each one can be undone with the Undo button.
Step 5: Run, then check the result
Check where the files will go: Default output folder saves them in your workspace’s output folder, in a trim folder with a subfolder for today’s date, such as 10-15. Click Change to pick another folder for this run. Then click Run trim.
When the run ends, each file shows Done. Each new file keeps its name with -trim added, such as filming-tips-take-3-trim.mp4. Fast keeps the original format; Precise, silence removal and clips with several sections are saved as MP4. Click View on a file to check it, and Open folder to go to the trimmed copies. See See and compare your results and Where your files are saved.

Every setting, and when to change it
The panel shows the Time range settings or the Remove silence settings, depending on the Trim type you pick. The Studio has its own silence settings for each clip.
- Trim type
Keep one part of every video, or cut the quiet parts out of every video.
- RangeTime range, Remove silence
- DefaultTime range
- Mode
With Time range. Fast copies the kept part with no quality change but starts on the nearest keyframe. Precise cuts on the exact frame and saves an MP4.
- RangeFast, Precise
- DefaultFast
- Start
Where the kept part begins. Decimals work, such as 0:02.5.
- Rangem:ss, h:mm:ss or seconds
- DefaultEmpty (the start of the video)
- End
Where the kept part ends. It must be after Start. An End past the end of a short video stops at its end.
- Rangem:ss, h:mm:ss or seconds
- DefaultEmpty (the end of the video)
- Sensitivity
With Remove silence. Auto listens for speech and adapts to each video’s background noise. Gentle removes only clear silence, and Tight removes the most.
- RangeAuto, Gentle, Balanced, Tight
- DefaultAuto
- Minimum pause
The shortest quiet moment that is removed. Shorter pauses stay.
- Range0.1 to 5 seconds
- Default0.5 seconds
- Edge padding
Quiet time kept before and after each bit of speech, so words don’t start or end too sharply.
- Range0 to 1 second
- Default0.12 seconds
How do I get the best results?
- To cut the start and end of many takes, use Time range with Fast. It is instant and keeps the full quality. Leave a little room before your Start, because Fast begins on a keyframe.
- For a cut on an exact frame, use Precise, or set the cut in the Studio.
- For talking videos, start with Remove silence on Auto. If it cuts too much, raise Minimum pause or Edge padding, or choose Gentle. If pauses remain, choose Tight.
- Check one clip first. Open it in the Studio, turn on Remove silence in the Silence tab and watch the Result. When it sounds right, set the same values in the panel for the batch.
- For ums and repeats, use the Transcript tab’s Fillers list and click a few to hear them before you remove them all.
Why does a result look or sound wrong?
- The video starts a moment too early. Fast starts on the nearest keyframe before your Start. Use Precise for an exact start.
- Words are clipped at the start or end. Raise Edge padding, or choose a gentler Sensitivity.
- The cuts feel rushed. Raise Minimum pause so short natural pauses stay. In the Studio, click + Keep on a pause to put it back.
- Nothing was removed. The video may have no sound, or be silent all through. Hangar then keeps the whole clip instead of making an empty file. The Studio says so in the Silence tab.
- The file is now an MP4. Precise, Remove silence and clips with several kept sections are always saved as MP4. Use Fast with one Start and End to keep the original format.
- A file failed saying there is nothing left to keep. The Start time is after the end of that video. Check the time, or trim that clip in the Studio.
- Run trim is grayed out with a message about Start or End. A time is not in a format Hangar understands, or End is before Start. Fix the time under the box.
For other errors, see A file failed: what to check.
Limits
- Trim Video takes MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, M4V, MPG, MPEG, TS, MTS, M2TS, 3GP and WMV files.
- Each video gives one file. To cut a video into several files, use Split Video.
- Precise, silence removal and clips with several kept sections always save an MP4.
- Changes made in the Studio last until you close Hangar.
- The Transcript tab needs a one-time 574 MB download of the speech model.
- Add video files, not folders.
- Everything runs on your computer. Nothing is uploaded.
Common questions
Does trimming lower the quality of my video?
Not with Fast. Fast copies the part you keep exactly as it is, so nothing is re-encoded and nothing is lost. Precise, silence removal and clips with several kept sections are re-encoded to a new MP4 file, which can change the quality slightly.
Why does my Fast trim start a little before the time I typed?
Fast can only start a clip on a keyframe, a full picture the video stores from time to time. It uses the keyframe at or just before your Start time. Choose Precise to start on the exact frame.
Can I remove the pauses from a talking video automatically?
Yes. Under Trim type, choose Remove silence and run. Hangar finds the quiet parts in each video and cuts them out. To check the cuts first, open the Studio and turn on Remove silence in the Silence tab.
Can I cut out ums and repeated words?
Yes, in the Studio. Open the Transcript tab, click Transcribe, then click Fillers to review and remove ums, uhs and repeated words. The first time, Hangar downloads its speech model (574 MB). It runs on your computer, and nothing is uploaded.
Can I keep several parts of one video?
Yes. Open the Studio and drag across the removed (striped) parts of the timeline that you want to keep. Each amber section is kept, and they are joined into one video.
Is my original video changed?
No. Hangar saves a new file with -trim added to the name, in your output folder, and leaves the original where it was.
Still stuck?
